As there was not a Masonic Lodge meeting in Nuneaton in the 1830’s, the few local men who were interested in Freemasonry had to travel the eight-mile journey on horseback to attend the nearest Warwickshire Lodge, Trinity Lodge No.254 (then No. 476), meeting at the Castle Inn, Broadgate, Coventry.

The journey and increased interest in Freemasonry led to a petition being raised by members of Trinity Lodge No. 476 to Consecrate a Lodge based in Nuneaton, taking its name from the 12th Century Abbey or more correctly, the Priory of Nuneaton. The Abbey Lodge No. 432 (then No. 625) was founded in 1836, by eight founding Members.

Abbey Lodge has been meeting continuously in Nuneaton since its consecration and meetings are held at the Masonic Hall, Newdegate Place, Nuneaton, CV11 4EZ on the third Friday in October to May.

With thirty-one subscribing members and an average age of 54, our members come from diverse backgrounds with ages ranging from twenty-six to ninety-four years old.

There is ample free parking available (by arrangement with a local parking company) and the area is well served by both train and bus. Whilst many of our Candidates live or work in Nuneaton, we do encourage and accept members from further afield, if they wish to join us.

Abbey Lodge operates a Lodge of Instruction (LoI) which gives a great opportunity for Brethren to meet in an informal environment, practising, experiencing, learning and asking questions about our Rituals in terms of words and actions through all appropriate Offices. The LoI is well attended and this reflects in the quality of Ritual practiced in the Lodge, something we are all very proud of and keen to continue, not only for the work undertake but the new friendships fostered through regular meetings with each other.

Whilst there is never any pressure to progress in Lodge, those who do wish to do so are given the opportunity to move forward at a pace that suits their availability and skills. For Members not wishing to progress so quickly, we tailor learning to their requirements.

Recruitment for new members has been consistently healthy with friends, family and Provincial recommendations steadily increasing our membership.  We also encourage visitors to attend our meetings and arrange visits to local Lodges such as Trinity Lodge No. 254, Athlestan Lodge No. 1333, Newdegate Lodge No. 5102, Etone Lodge No. 5981 and Bedewood No. 7274.

Social events like Sunday lunches and formal ladies’ nights are well attended by friends and family and in line with Freemasonry in general, we raise money for local and national charities, including Mary Ann Evans Hospice, Guide Dogs, Nuneaton Foodbank and Parkinsons U.K. to name a few. All donations are co-ordinated by the vigilance and benevolence of the Lodge Almoner.
