A Degree Too Hot

Meridian Lodge No. 9003 enjoyed a memorable meeting on Wednesday 8th July as members, families and friends gathered at the unique and historic Guy’s Cliffe Masonic Centre near Warwick for an evening that combined tradition, celebration and fellowship.

The meeting began with an excellent Second Degree Ceremony in which Bro. Paul Taylor was passed to the Second Degree. The ceremony was conducted by Worshipful Master Matt Perkins and his officers, maintaining the high standards for which Meridian Lodge is well known.

The occasion was made even more special by the presence of two distinguished guests: the heads of Freemasonry, Phil Hall and Jeremy Francis, who joined members in celebrating the evening.

With temperatures soaring well into the 30s, the Lodge responded in true British fashion. In a rare but entirely sensible departure from normal dress, the Brethren dispensed with their jackets and white gloves, conducting the ceremony comfortably in shirt sleeves. Once the meeting had concluded, formal attire gave way to shorts and casual summer clothing for the evening’s Hog Roast and Beer Festival, held beneath the marquee in the beautiful surroundings of Guy’s Cliffe.

While the Lodge was in session, the ladies and non-Masonic guests were far from idle. They enjoyed a guided tour of the remarkable Guy’s Cliffe estate, exploring its fascinating history before joining the Brethren after the meeting for a further guided tour and explanation of the Lodge Room. It provided a wonderful opportunity for guests to gain a greater understanding of Freemasonry and the unique building in which Meridian Lodge meets.

Few Masonic meeting places can rival the atmosphere or heritage of Guy’s Cliffe. The site has a history stretching back more than 1,500 years, with traditions linking it to St. Dubricius, the legendary Guy of Warwick and centuries of religious and local history. Over the years it has served as a chapel, hermitage, grand country house, wartime hospital and, thanks to the vision of Aldwyn Porter and generations of dedicated volunteers, has become one of the most remarkable Masonic meeting places anywhere in the world.

Today, the ancient chapel continues to serve as a Masonic Temple, while volunteers from the resident Lodges and the wider community work tirelessly to preserve this extraordinary historic site for future generations.

As the sun set over the ruins of Guy’s Cliffe House, members and guests enjoyed excellent food, locally brewed beers and outstanding company. The relaxed atmosphere perfectly reflected the spirit of Meridian Lodge, combining the traditions of Freemasonry with friendship, family and community.
