Don’t Let Winter Nights Stop You Enjoying Freemasonry

by John Kisbey, Assistant Provincial Grand Master

As we move into November and the darker evenings close in, I recently caught up with well-known Warwickshire mason, Gerry Logue, to chat about a seasonal issue many brethren face.

After the usual talk about the clocks going back and the rediscovery of car headlight switches, Gerry made a thoughtful observation:

“It’s around this time of year that we start to lose some good masons because they’re worried about driving at night. For some, it’s due to deteriorating eyesight; for others, it’s simply the discomfort of winter conditions.”

Many Lodges do their best to help, with members offering lifts or other assistance, but this isn’t always sustainable. Sadly, it can result in some brethren quietly stepping back from Lodge life — and missing out on the fellowship and fulfilment Freemasonry brings.

However, as Gerry pointed out, there’s a practical alternative.

“At St Philip’s Lodge No. 5580, we meet during the day. It’s ideal for those who prefer not to drive at night.”

Far from starting over, joining a daylight lodge offers experienced masons the chance to widen their circle of friendship and continue enjoying their Freemasonry in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

“So brethren,” says John, “don’t let winter nights be the reason you stop enjoying your Freemasonry. There are excellent alternatives out there.”

St Philip’s Daylight Lodge meets at Knowle Masonic Centre on the second Wednesday in October, November, December, February and March. Meetings open at 11:00 am, followed by lunch at 1:00 pm.

The next meeting, on Wednesday 12th November, will feature a Remembrance Service Ceremony — a wonderful opportunity to visit and see how the arrangements might suit you.
