About us
The word Craft first appeared somewhere before 1135 to illustrate a new type of Guild, the Craft Guild, a body or fraternity of skilled craftsmen which came into being to watch over the interests of skilled work people. The word is synonynous with the words Art and Mystery, word which must have been a very familiar ring with Pharmacists who may remembrer the words on their certificates of qualification, That he shall be instructed in the arts, crafts and mysteries of the Chemist s’ profession.
This thought must have occurred to a small group of Pharmacists in Birmingham, all past masters in Freemasonry, who on Tuesday January 21st 1919, met together in the office of a firm of wholesale and manufacturing Chemists in the Lower Priory, in order to discuss the possibility of forming a Masonic Craft Lodge for Pharmacists and allied Professions for the Midlands area, to be held in Birmingham. The following recommendations were agreed;
- The name of the Lodge be The Alchmey Lodge.
- The initiation fee would be £10:10s
- The joining fee would be £5.5s
- That the annual Subscription would be £3;3s (In 1919 £3;3s would be equivalent to £167 today)
- That the Offices of the Lodge would be offered in seniority.
- That the Lodge would meet on the 4th Wednesday in January, February, March, April, September, October and November.
- That the meeting place should be the Masonic Hall, Severn Street, Birmingham.
- That Leigh Lodge No. 887 be asked to support the petition.
The Consecration of Alchmey Lodge took place on Monday 2nd June 1919 Severn Street Birmingham.
