About us

For Hertford Lodge, the story begins in 1907 in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield. Founded with clear intent, named in honour of Hugh de Grey Conway Seymour, 6th Marquess of Hertford, and led by its first Master, Charles Hercules Reynolds, it has grown from a single moment in history into something enduring — a place where tradition is not simply remembered, but actively lived.

Built on the timeless values of integrity, respect, friendship, and charity, Hertford Lodge reflects the world around it. It is diverse, inclusive, and welcoming, bringing together individuals from all age groups and walks of life. Far from the misconceptions that sometimes surround Freemasonry, there is no secrecy in intent — only openness, shared purpose, and genuine human connection.

At its heart, Hertford Lodge is about people. It is where friendships are formed, strengthened, and sustained. Members come together regularly — not only in lodge, but through a full and engaging social calendar that includes families, friends, and guests. From informal gatherings to formal dinners and charitable events, there is a strong and unmistakable sense of belonging.

The Lodge carries a clear commitment to making a difference. Through fundraising and charitable activity, Hertford Lodge supports both local and national causes, including organisations such as Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Through the wider Masonic charitable network, its impact reaches even further — supporting communities, improving lives, and addressing real and immediate needs.

Based at the Masonic Hall on Mill Street in Sutton Coldfield — a building the Lodge proudly co-owns — members meet regularly throughout the year. These meetings are not merely ceremonial; they are part of a shared journey, one that encourages personal growth, reinforces values, and strengthens community.

Hertford Lodge stands as a living tradition — shaped by its history, strengthened by its members, and carried forward with purpose.

Why Join Us?

If you’re looking for something that pushes you, sharpens you, and connects you to something bigger than yourself, Freemasonry is where that search stops. You may have already taken your first tentative step of a potentially life-changing journey.
It is the passing down of a culture from one generation to the next, not only through words, but through friendship, shared practices, and lived experience. It shapes how we think, how we act, and how we connect with one another.
As a progressive lodge, we guide and support all our initiates through one-to-one mentorship programmes, encouraging them to make full use of the excellent online platforms provided by Province and UGLE. We believe that tradition is not a constraint but a foundation: something to build upon, refine, and carry forward.
Freemasonry is not a world of secrets; it is not fixed; it evolves through the men who choose to uphold it. It remains powerful because it continues to inspire, to challenge, and perhaps most importantly, to make good men better.
