About us
At any gathering people will talk and discover common interests and associations. Such was the case when a Home Guard Unit was formed in Erdington, Birmingham during the Second World War. It soon became apparent that there was a strong Masonic connection between many members. The idea of a new Lodge emerged and the person who started the ball rolling was Major Vernon Grosvenor.
Lt.Col. Samuel Godsall was brought into the Founding as he was the Commanding Officer of the 23rd Warwickshire Battalion of the Warwickshire Fusiliers under whose ‘umbrella’ the Home Guard fell. The Lodge logo is an Indian Antelope, the crest of the Battalion.
So, on the 8th September 1943 the Lodge of Loyal Service was Consecrated, only four months after the first Founders meeting.
Our name reflects the ethos of the Home Guard, ‘Loyal Service’ to King and Country.
Applicants had to be a member of the Home Guard but, understandably, as time went on, this stipulation had to be dropped. However, we do look for members who can associate with that ethos of ‘’Service, King and Country.’
The Lodge of Loyal Service is a small lodge of friendly dedicated Masons who value charity and integrity very highly. There are currently thirteen subscribing members from diverse backgrounds with ages ranging from fifty-four to eighty-four years old.
The Lodge has a reputation for conducting the Masonic ritual to a high standard. To this end we hold a Lodge of Instruction which gives our Brethren the opportunity to rehearse and learn their respective roles in a friendly and informal setting.
We like to involve our partners whenever possible and hold an informal Christmas meeting to which they and friends are invited to dine. In addition, we invariably hold a family luncheon during the ‘down season.’
We meet in the evening of the second Friday in October, December, January, February and March at The Yenton Assembly Rooms, 73-75 Gravelly Hill North, Erdington, Birmingham B23 6BJ. There is a large car park; the rooms are well served by buses and the cross-city rail service.
